Our Music

Since it began, Grace Chicago has been engaging some of Chicago’s most dynamic musicians to create a truly unique sacred music experience.

The Christian Church has a rich musical heritage and Grace's music taps into its full history with unique twists on the ancient and the modern. Director of Music, Artie Black, is a saxophonist, composer, and educator. Artie guides our weekly worship service in collaboration with artists like Tim Mulvenna on drums & percussion, guitarist Matt Gold, bassist Brian Courage, bassist & vocalist Katie Ernst, and bassist & guitarist Kitt Lyles and vocalists Molly Lehr and Michele Thomas. Music at Grace incorporates new arrangements of traditional repertoire, a large collection of original pieces, and material that draws on the rich history of Chicago music.

The musicians of Grace have recorded 2 albums of original songs and arrangements of traditional hymns. In 2007 they released Sounding Grace under the direction of James Falzone, Grace's first director of music. In 2019, Davin Youngs produced the recording The Third Thing. You'll hear songs from each of these albums on Sundays at Grace, often reimagined in a new style to fit that week's liturgy.
